a16z's New Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps: Usage Is Wide but Shallow, Spending Is Concentrated
Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) published the seventh edition of its ranking of the 100 most-used consumer gen AI apps. The list draws on web traffic, mobile users, and spending data; the data is for US consumers, mostly from August 2026.
In brief
- The top: on web, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and DeepSeek; on mobile, ChatGPT, CapCut, Canva, Character.ai, and Gemini. In US consumer spending, the top three are ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Only 11 new products entered this edition, the fewest across the report's seven editions.
- Wide but shallow use: according to the report, about half of US consumers say they use AI, but only 25% use it daily. In August, 4.5% of consumers had a paid subscription to ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude, up from 2.1% a year earlier.
- Concentrated spending: the top 1% of spenders account for roughly half of observed spending. The median AI payer spends $25 a month. Heavy spenders mostly pay for coding, productivity, and creative tools.
- Personal agents and platform fights: the report sees personal AI agents as a rising theme. It notes Amazon shut down Meta's Muse agent in under two weeks, while companies like Shopify, Instacart, and Expedia signed official integrations. It also writes that Claude rose quickly for a while and then saw its average daily desktop sessions decline in July and August, while ChatGPT re-accelerated.
Our take
To us, the report's most useful line is this: AI use is wide, but not very deep for almost anyone. Most people use AI occasionally and lightly; most of the spending, and likely most of the value, sits with a small group who've built it into their daily work. That group mostly pays for coding, productivity, and creative work. For anyone trying to grow a business with AI, the message is clear: the difference comes less from which tool you use than from how deeply you build AI into your work. Another note in the report is about niche focus: products like OpenEvidence, which serves only physicians, can make the list. Going deep on a specific profession or sector may be a more realistic path than competing with the general-purpose giants. Two caveats: the data is US-only, and the ranking is based on traffic, which isn't always the same as value.
