Fable 5 Is Back — But Everyone Saw It Can Be Switched Off
Released on June 9, Fable 5 was suspended three days later. Amazon researchers had shown the model could be pushed past its safeguards to find software vulnerabilities and demonstrate how to exploit them; the U.S. government treated that as a national-security risk and imposed an export control. Because Anthropic couldn't verify users' nationality in real time, it cut access for everyone. When the control was lifted on June 30, the model returned to global access on July 1.

The turning point wasn't Fable 5 coming back — it was watching a government pull it from the global market with a single order. The model isn't even a weapon; by Anthropic's own account, "many less capable models" could produce the same output — and it was still switched off. That makes it concrete: frontier AI models are now treated like chips or arms, a strategic export item. The industry's reflex was to band together — Anthropic, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google built a shared jailbreak-severity framework. Which leaves one question: next time a control lands, will the company cut everyone off again, or will the plumbing finally be ready?
