OpenAI Updates Its ChatGPT Voice Page: "Live" Mode Runs on GPT-Live-1, Per-Plan Usage Limits Clarified
OpenAI updated the help page describing ChatGPT's voice conversation feature. The page clarifies where the GPT-Live voice experience we covered in July stands today, and how much of it each plan gets.
In brief
- Three options: "Live" (listens and speaks at the same time, allowing natural interruptions; GPT-Live-1, or GPT-Live-1 mini depending on plan), "Advanced" (the previous real-time voice; still needed for video and screen sharing on mobile), and "Standard" (a turn-by-turn mode that transcribes first, then responds).
- What Live can do: web search, memory, plugins, and connected apps, plus text and images in the same chat. Actions that need approval are confirmed on screen; spoken approval isn't supported. Live has no video or screen sharing.
- Usage limits (rolling 24-hour window): limited GPT-Live-1 mini access on Free; 3 hours on Go (mini), 3 hours on Plus, 15 hours on the $100 Pro plan, and unlimited GPT-Live-1 on the $200 Pro plan. Enterprise uses per-minute credits or usage-based pricing (e.g., $0.05 per minute).
- Work use: "Voice in Work" lets you use connected apps and create documents, presentations, and spreadsheets; in the desktop app you can start tasks by voice and coordinate multiple agents from one conversation.
Our take
This isn't a launch, it's a help page, but it's the kind that shows where a product has arrived. Voice is no longer just "chat that talks": Live can search the web mid-conversation, use your connected apps, produce documents in work mode, and coordinate agents on desktop. The concrete gain for our audience is in the plan table: a Plus user gets 3 hours a day of real-time voice work, which is real time for sorting out work on the road, in the car, or away from a screen. Two things are worth knowing: if you want to show your screen or video, you need Advanced, not Live, and Live doesn't currently apply preset personalities. And OpenAI's own reminder: voice answers can be wrong too, so double-check things like dates and times.
