Replit Introduces "Free Mode": Everyday Tasks No Longer Burn Credits Within a Paid Subscription

Replit announced a new way to use its product called "Free Mode." The name may sound like "it's free now," but it isn't: it means that within a paid subscription, everyday tasks no longer burn metered credits.

In brief

  • What was announced: Replit Free Mode, on August 18. It's a new way to use Agent where chat, ideation, and "everyday tasks" no longer consume credits. It's powered by OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Luna.
  • Important — it's NOT a free plan: Free Mode applies within a paid subscription. Replit says you can "create up to 30x more with just your monthly subscription"; the Core plan is $20/month and includes up to 30 hours of chat per month. Usage limits reset every 5 hours; Pro has higher limits.
  • What still costs credits: complex or high-value work. For that, Agent may steer you to Power Mode (formerly Economy) or Max Mode; Max uses higher-performance models for heavier work.
  • Note: the "I couldn't find its limits," "no more token anxiety" praise on the page is from Replit's own early-access users — not independent evaluation.

Our take

The key here is reading the name correctly: "Free Mode" doesn't mean "Replit is free now"; it means "within your paid plan ($20/mo Core), everyday AI tasks no longer eat credits with every click." For an audience that builds apps or tools on Replit, that's a real, practical improvement: less "am I burning tokens" anxiety on chat and ideation (up to 30 hours a month), and more room to experiment before you build. But let's be clear-eyed: you still pay the subscription, and the heavy lifting (complex builds, Max Mode) still costs extra. It also reflects the industry's broader direction — as models get cheaper (this mode runs on GPT-5.6 Luna), vendors are shifting from metered credits toward flat subscriptions for routine work. In short: good news if you already use Replit or want a predictable monthly cost for everyday AI building — just don't read "Free Mode" as "free."
